A young police officer Agla (Isla Mustanoja) bursts into the psychiatrist’s (Juho Milonoff) office in the middle of another patient’s therapy session. She wants medication. A lot of it. She has experienced something terrible and just wants to sleep and forget. But the psychiatrist doesn’t let Agla off that easily, as he believes he has just the right remedy. The psychiatrist has developed a method to cure shame entirely. Agla’s memories and stories from the past pull her from the 1970s to the present day, from her grandmother’s (Satu Silvo) place in Florida back to the cold of Iceland.

Seven Fairy Tales of Shame boldly and refreshingly brings to light the questions of transgenerational issues—those we remain silent about, medicate, and that ultimately cost us dearly.

The production is directed by Helsinki-born director and playwright Ona Korpiranta. Her previous works include Solaris and On the Day God Made a Father. The cast includes Youssef Asad Alkhatib, Katja Küttner, Juho Milonoff, Isla Mustanoja, Tuuli Paju, and Satu Silvo.

Written by the multi-award-winning Icelandic playwright Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson, Seven Fairy Tales of Shame (Sjö ævintýri um skömm) premiered at the Icelandic National Theatre in 2022 and became a theatrical sensation in its home country. The Finnish premiere will be at KOM-teatteri on September 11, 2024.

Performances will continue until December 14. KOM-teatteri will continue to offer English subtitles. All performances of Seven Fairy Tales of Shame will be presented with English subtitles.
