In 1954, a late-night television broadcast shows a candle in the middle of smoke. A woman in black with an incredibly narrow waist approaches the camera. She lets out a blood-curdling shriek and sighs in relief. “Ahh. Screaming relaxes me.” Television history has been made.
The story of Maila Nurmi is anything but a typical rags-to-riches tale. She made her way to stardom during Hollywood’s golden age and quickly rose to world fame, but just as quickly her career also withered. Just over a year after the start of the Vampira Show, Nurmi was fired and ended up being hounded by the scandalous press. Maila Nurmi’s stardom was over, but the Vampira character lived on, enriching many spiritually and some also financially. Nurmi herself died poor and reclusive.
Written by Susanna Airaksinen and Rosa-Maria Perä, Vampira combines camp spirit and black humor with an incredible life story. The work is a praise for the richness of imagination, strangeness, outsiders and failure.
