A Word from the Director
”The story was born when, a few years ago, I was walking through Central Park and listening to Stam1na’s album Taival. I was inspired by Antti Hyyrynen’s lyrics dealing with letting go and death. Losing someone close is a familiar theme for me as well. Hyyrynen became interested in the idea and provided background material for the lyrics, which became the foundation of the play. KOM Theatre, with its strong tradition of intimate family dramas, felt like the right home for this material.
The finality of death colours everyday moments, turning something as ordinary as a Tuesday night macaroni casserole into a unique memory. The logic of memory – what a certain object brings to mind, or how one notices using the same words once spoken to oneself – runs as a guiding thread through the performance. Memories also resemble dreams, and neither can be fully trusted.
When someone close to you has died, you repeatedly find yourself dealing with people you do not know, whose daily lives are nonetheless touched by that death through their work. The sheer number of practical matters, and sometimes even their absurdity, must somehow be reconciled with the emotions stirred by loss. A person cannot simply decide to enjoy a weekend at the summer cottage, to grieve or not to grieve. Or to live forever. Taival is a story about forces beyond our control.
It has been a great joy to make this journey with such a skilled creative team, and to welcome you along on this nocturnal journey – into a dream, lasting only a moment, where it is my hope that a connection can be formed beyond the things that separate us.”
